World Regional Studies (WRS): An Introduction
World Regional Studies (WRS) is one of the academic journals sponsored by the Geographical Society of China (GSC), and superintended by China Association for Science Technology. The journal publishes rigorous academic articles in the following main fields: 1) theoretical and empirical analysis on world geopolitics and economic geography; 2) analysis on global economic connectivity and spatial flow of economic factors; 3)theories and practices on international regional development, urban and rural construction, and spatial production and restructuring; 4) analysis on the background and evolution of global geopolitical hotspots; 5) international development of geography as a discipline and reform trends of geography in both K12 and higher education.
WRS was officially established in 1992, but its predecessor can be traced back to 1981 when China started to implement its reform and opening-up policies. To meet the immense demand of Chinese to understand, analyze and learn foreign advanced experiences, the Geographical Society of China published the journal “Collected Papers of World Regional Studies.”The well-known Chinese geographer, Dr. Chunfen Lee, served as the editor-in-chief of the journal that was later renamed as WRS. Over the last several decades, WRS has always kept the unique feature of ‘studying the world from the perspective of China, researching China against the background of world’. Being the only academic journal publishing articles in world regional geography, WRS has long been an important platform for exhibition and exchange of research achievements by experts, academics and researchers in this field.
As a state level academic publication, WRS is ranked as a core Chinese academic journal in China, and a source journal of the extended Chinese Social Science Citing Index (CSSCI). It was ranked the third in terms of articles appearing in “human geography article reprinting”, published by the information center for social sciences, Renmin University of China in 2011. In 2012, it was awarded the “Excellent Journal”in East China area by the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Press and Publication. WRS has been included as a fundamental journal in many databases, such as China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Longyuan Journals, and so on.
The editorial Committee of WRS consists of more than 40 members, including famous academicians, experts and professors throughout the country. Dr. Du Debin, the Head of the Department of Human Geography in East China Normal University, the Director of the World Regional Geography Commission of GSC, is currently serving as the editor-in-chief. The editorial work is carried out by a group of geographers from the East China Normal University, Shanghai, where the editorial office is housed.
