    The spatiotemporal evolution of four-dimensional trade relations between China and the Indian Ocean Rim countries

    The Indian Ocean Rim (IOR) is not only a vital source of energy and trade routes for China but also a key area for advancing of the Belt and Road Initiative. However, the significant differences in resources, economic structures, and development levels among IOR countries create challenges for bilateral trade cooperation. Therefore, analyzing the evolution of trade relations between China and IOR countries is of great importance. This study integrates the Fisher's optimal segmentation method, a four-dimensional indicator system for trade relations—comprising trade flow, trade intensity index, trade competitiveness index, and trade complementarity index, and Self-Organizing Map (SOM) clustering to build a comprehensive analytical framework for examining the spatiotemporal evolution of trade between China and the IOR countries from 1992 to 2020. The results reveal that China's trade relations with the IOR experienced four distinct phases, being 1992-2001, 2002-2008, 2009-2014, and 2015-2020. Over this period, bilateral trade volume surged from US$35.7 billion to US$833.1 billion, while China's share in the IOR's total trade rose from 3% to 16%, indicating a substantial deepening of economic ties, and China has become the IOR's largest trading partner since the third phase(2009-2014),with its advantage continuously strengthening. Overall, China-IOR trade relations are characterized by low competitiveness and strong complementarity. However, regional variations exist: competitiveness is relatively higher in Southeast Asia, whereas West Asia and Africa display a clear resource-manufacturing complementarity pattern. Furthermore, SOM clustering results further identify four types of China–IOR trade relationships: core partners, stable collaborators, highly-dependent partners, and weakly-connected nations. This paper provides a new perspective and methodological approach for understanding complex international trade relationships.

    Evolution of spatio-temporal patterns and driving mechanisms of joint military exercises in China's neighboring regions

    Paying close attention to the spatio-temporal pattern of joint military exercises in China's neighboring regions and the driving mechanism, and actively responding to the military challenges posed by extraterritorial powers in the region are of great significance to the maintenance of China's neighboring geopolitical security and the construction of the "Belt and Road". Based on the Harvard Joint Military Exercise (JME) dataset, we use social network analysis and geospatial analysis to explore the spatial and temporal evolution of JMEs in China's neighboring regions and their driving mechanisms from 1990 to 2022. The results found that: ① China and its neighboring regions' joint military exercises show the characteristics of fast development, more participating countries, frequent times, large scale, etc., the South China Sea has become the main activity area of the exercises, and the transformation of bilateral military exercises to multilateral ones is characterized significantly. ② During the period of 1990—2022, the network density and the number of network relationships show a clear upward trend, with countries in the region increasingly cooperating militarily and the overall spatial structure becoming more solid. ③ The distribution of associations in the joint military exercise network shows the coexistence of spatial agglomeration and spatial disorder, with the U.S.-dominated community and the Russian- and Chinese-led Central Asian community having increasingly clear boundaries, while the associations of South and Southeast Asian countries are complex and variable. ④ In terms of the driving mechanism, the geostrategic location is the supporting force, the perception of national security risks, military modernization and construction are the driving forces, and the strategic aspirations of great powers and regional geopolitical risks are the impetus.

    Time-space evolution of abandoned railways and the changes of urban spatial structure in Japan

    Based on urban development concepts of "incremental expansion"and "stock optimization", how to regenerate the abandoned urban railways, and what impacts they have on the spatial structure of the cities along the lines which have made great contributions to urban industrial development have become a common issue to be faced in urban regeneration. This study not only analyzed space-time characteristics and influence factors of railways abandonment extended in terms of country, region and city, but also summarized the patterns and types of spatial changes of railroad disappearing cities. The analysis results show that the abandoned railways included the street railways in metropolis, industrial railways and simple railways in rural areas, and short branch lines. And it expanded to the national railway and the main line in the region and railways of metropolitan area in Japan. There are most of abandoned railway in Kyushu and Hokkaido including all of 11 cities where railways have vanished. Based on the analysis of land-use changes near railway stations in the 11 cities, the urban spatial structure has changed differently, falling into three types:a downtown-shrinking type, an urban-development-irrelevant type, and a transit-oriented type.①The downtown shrinkage type is primarily characterized by more pronounced economic decline, building demolition and contraction redevelopment in the downtown area surrounding the train station; ②With respect to urban development less-favored type, urban development was inactive around the train station before the railways were abandoned, while urban development didn't expand in the direction of the railway station marginalized after the railways were abandoned;③In terms of the transit-oriented development type, the public facilities and bus terminals were located around the former railways station and railways sites, and the size of the urban center was enlarged.Finally,the paper generalizes the models and types of railway vanishing cities spatial changes in Japan and consequently puts forward some suggestions for urban renewal of railway vanishing cities in China.

    Dialogues on geographies of sustainability transitions from mutual learning between China and foreign countries

    Against the backdrop of global climate governance and China's "Dual Carbon" strategy, sustainability transitions have become a core agenda for national and regional development. Serving as a crucial bridge between economic geography and sustainability science, the geographies of sustainability transitions research emphasize embedding the concepts of "place" "space" and "scale" into transition analysis. In doing so, it addresses the theoretical limitations of "spatial blindness" and Eurocentrism prevalent in the mainstream literature. This dialogue, thus, brings together the perspectives of several young Chinese geographers. By reviewing the theoretical paradigms and empirical characteristics of current international transition geography studies and integrating them with Chinese contexts, it outlines key theoretical, empirical, and methodological issues for future related research in China. The dialogue highlights that China's unique "top-down" policy system and large-scale transition practices provide a rich field for theoretical innovation. We call that research needs to transcend a mere focus on technological substitution or mission-oriented policies, instead paying close attention to issues such as materiality, institutional spatiality, and just transitions. It would help to reveal the co-evolutionary mechanisms of technology, institutions, and space. Empirical topics covered in this dialogue include energy system restructuring, digital infrastructure layout, electric vehicle diffusion, and community regeneration, all emphasizing multi-scalar adaptation and regional differentiation. Methodologically, the dialogue advocates combining multi-source data, fieldwork, and causal identification to enhance explanatory power. This study not only provides theoretical guidance for understanding China's complex geographical processes of transitions. It also calls for mutual learning between China and the West to foster a sound research paradigm on geographies of transitions with greater social inclusiveness and stronger explanatory power regarding transition processes and mechanisms in place and space.

    Framework problems and their future expansion directions of the international studies on geographies of sustainability transitions

    The paper centers on key conceptual frameworks and their geographical applications in the international literature on sustainability transitions. Through a systematic and critical review of the English-speaking journal articles relating to sustainability transitions, the paper aims to comprehensively identify and examine six core conceptual frameworks currently being employed in this field. They are, namely, Strategic Niche Management, Transition Management, Multi-level Perspective, Technological Innovation Systems, Transition Agency and Change in Sustainability Transitions, and Global Innovation Systems. This review paper uncovers the advantages and limitations of these conceptual frameworks/perspectives, highlighting the problems of each framework and particularly the insufficient explanatory power owing to the facts of poorly or not integrating key geographical concepts into these frameworks. Building on such critique, the paper explores five core geographical concepts (space, scale, nature, power, and justice), and analyzes their comparative advantages when doing research on geographies of sustainability transitions. It also proposes potential directions and methodologies for how to properly integrate geographical concepts into the existing frameworks. Furthermore, this paper identifies several key gaps in the existing literature on geographies of sustainability transitions, by suggesting to engage more with the concept of spatial justice. It is particularly argued that regional inequalities should be placed at the core for future studies on geographies of sustainability transitions.

    Conceptual understanding and geographical reflections on international just transition in the context of sustainability transition

    To achieve successful sustainability transition, "justice" must be considered as its core guiding principle and intrinsic social foundation. This process has profound geographic attributes that must take into account spatial, scale, and relational dimensions to avoid reproducing or exacerbating existing inequalities. Grounded at the intersection of social-technical transition theory and the concept of just transition, this article systematically discusses the following: Low-carbon transition as a profound transformation of social-technical systems, its complexity necessitates the inclusion of justice as a core consideration, as mainstream "technology-efficiency" pathways often neglect the social dimension, leading to unfair distribution and resistance. Therefore, justice is the moral prerequisite and social foundation for the smooth progress of transition. The concept of "justice" is rooted in various justice movements and has evolved into a comprehensive framework encompassing recognition, procedure, distribution, and corrective justice, requiring the recognition of the rights of vulnerable groups, ensuring their participation in decision-making, fair sharing of benefits, and compensation for losses. Additionally, the article critically reflects on the theoretical shortcomings that may arise from the dominance of the "Global North" in current concepts, inability to reflect the demands of the "Global South," as well as practical issues such as the disconnect between theory and policy, over-reliance on technology, and binary opposition in governance pathways. Importantly, the article emphasizes that just transition inherently involves numerous geographic issues, with geographical perspectives on space, scale, and relationships revealing geographic imbalances in the consequences of transition, tensions in multi-scale interactions, and spatial manifestations of power struggles. Therefore, spatial justice, scale politics, and cross-border responsibilities must be central considerations. Finally, the article calls for a comprehensive, multidimensional, and interdisciplinary approach to advance research and practice, highlighting the irreplaceable role of geography in identifying unjust patterns, analyzing formation mechanisms, and designing context-specific pathways.

    The spatio-temporal evolution and influencing factors of carbon emissions in China's resource-based cities: A perspective of energy consumption

    This study uses prefecture-level data on energy, environment, society, and the economy to calculate industrial carbon emissions in 118 resource cities from 2006 to 2021. It constructs a green quality indicator (GREENQ) for the energy consumption structure. The study combines bivariate spatial autocorrelation analysis and the STIRPAT-threshold effect model to reveal the spatial interaction and coupling characteristics between energy green transition and carbon emissions in a time series, and to explore the influence mechanism of energy green transition on carbon emissions in resource cities. The study found that:①The overall industrial carbon emissions in China's resource-based cities exhibit a spatial pattern of "higher in the north and lower in the south, and higher in the east, while the central and western regions show a growing trend. Over time, the total industrial carbon emissions show a significant spatial clustering characteristic. The spatial differentiation of green quality indicators is closely related to carbon emissions, presenting a multi-polarized clustering feature.②As a threshold variable (GREENQ), the energy green transition shows a significant single threshold effect on carbon emissions, with a threshold value of 0.426 7. The phased impact is significant, and the green quality indicators are significantly negatively correlated with carbon emissions.③Different resource-based cities at different life cycles show significant heterogeneity in multiple dimensions, such as different levels of green quality indicators, time evolution dimensions, economic divisions, and industrial base categories. The impact mechanism of industrial carbon emissions also presents obvious heterogeneity characteristics. Finally, countermeasures and suggestions are proposed from various aspects, including adjusting the energy consumption structure, strengthening the concentration of innovative elements, and enhancing energy efficiency.

    How do the path breakthrough and place breakthrough of technological innovation affect the green transition? In the case of China's four major urban agglomerations

    Technological innovation is a key factor for facilitating the global green transition. However, few studies have empirically examined how technological innovation affects green transition from the path and place perspectives within the evolutionary economic geography framework. Using patent data (2005—2019) from China's four major urban agglomerations (Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, and Chengdu-Chongqing), we constructed two indicators—path breakthrough and place breakthrough—to identify four modes of urban green transition. We analyzed the relationship between these indicators and green transition using a fixed-effects regression model. The results show that: ① Green transition modes differ significantly across urban agglomerations. The Pearl River Delta has the highest proportion of cities with saltation or exaptation; the Yangtze River Delta has formed two horizontal spatial transition clusters of developmental transition highlands; while the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Chengdu-Chongqing agglomerations exhibit a highly unbalanced distribution of transition modes. ② With rising economic levels, urban green transition modes generally follow an evolutionary trend of "replication–exaptation–saltation". Most lagging cities struggle to break through in path niche innovation and unrelated technology, whereas only a few developed cities achieve both high place breakthrough and path breakthrough. ③Path breakthrough promotes urban green transition, though there're marked differences in the mechanisms underlying the transition among urban agglomerations. Finally, we provided targeted policy recommendations for different transition modes and the four major urban agglomerations.

    The impact of the Yangtze River Delta low-carbon technology innovation collaboration network on green development efficiency

    Clarifying how low-carbon technology innovation collaboration networks affect green development efficiency and generate spatial spillovers can facilitate the cross-regional allocation of innovation resources and coordinated urban green transitions. Using data on jointly filed low-carbon technology patents and socioeconomic indicators for 41 cities in the Yangtze River Delta from 2011 to 2021, this study applies social network analysis, the super-efficiency slacks-based measure model, spatial analysis, and the spatial Durbin model to examine the spatiotemporal evolution of the collaboration network and green development efficiency and to identify the direct and indirect effects associated with different network positions. The results show that: ① The number of patent collaborations, network density, and network complexity increased overall. By 2021, the network had developed into a diamond-shaped configuration centered on Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Ningbo, and other cities, with a hierarchical core-subcore-periphery structure. ② Green development efficiency improved overall, and its spatial pattern shifted from dual-pole leadership to dual-zone agglomeration. Changes in network density and overall green development efficiency were significantly positively correlated. ③ Different network positions had distinct effects on green development efficiency. Degree centrality was mainly associated with a significant positive indirect effect, closeness centrality with a significant positive direct effect, while the effect of betweenness centrality was not statistically significant. These findings provide implications for optimizing the low-carbon technology innovation collaboration network, strengthening technological spillovers from central cities, and advancing a coordinated green transition across the Yangtze River Delta.

    Patterns and performance of integrating internal and external innovation resources for regional industrial upgrading: Evidence from the advanced manufacturing firms in Jiangsu Province

    Industrial transition and upgrading depend on the effective combination of innovation resources. Conventionally, attention has focused on innovation cooperation between firms, while the role of "independent innovators" has been somewhat overlooked. Does a firm become a independent innovator due to the difficulties in cooperating with others, or because of its strong capabilities to innovate independently? In response, this paper investigates this question from the perspective of the various sources of innovation resources. Through combining the boundaries of firms and locations, four types of resource integration have emerged. This paper uses the survey data of 10 730 advanced manufacturing firms in Jiangsu Province for empirical studies. It employs the hierarchical clustering and Propensity Score Matching approaches to categorize the firms into four groups and compare their differences. Then, it constructs a baseline model to examine the effects of different integration types. To address the likely simultaneity issue and sample selection bias issue, this paper uses the simultaneous equations and Heckman two-stage approaches to estimate the coefficients. The empirical results show that: ① 43% of the firms in Jiangsu's advanced manufacturing sectors represent the characteristics of "independent innovators". Among them, 26% have the ability to integrate internal resources across different locations. ② Firms adopting the trans-location integration strategy are more capable than firms adopting the local integration strategy. They tend to occur in analytical industries and the peripheral locations. The "lone innovators" exhibit the potential to enhance the innovation capabilities of the peripheral locations. ③ The trans-location integration strategies have better innovation performance than the local integration strategies. Furthermore, there is no significant difference in innovation performance between the trans-location integration of internal and external resources of firms. ④ There is a significant mutually reinforcing relationship between the integration of internal resources (both trans-location and local integrations) and innovation performance. That is, the ability to integrate internal resources of firms and the improvement of innovation performance are mutually reinforcing. In contrast, the effects of innovation cooperation on innovation performance are insignificant. Overall, the empirical findings shed light on understanding the role of "lone innovators" in regional industrial transition and upgrading.

    The evolution of Macau's industries from the perspective of strategic coupling

    Presently, research on Macao's economic development predominantly focuses on the regional level, lacking a multi-scale perspective to comprehensively analyze the evolution of Macao's development trajectory. Consequently, this study employs the analytical framework of Global Production Network and the theory of strategic coupling to examine the transformation of Macao's industrial landscape. The primary finding indicates that Macao's globalization process is a result of strategic coupling, leveraging its geographical advantages and regional policies. Unlike other cities within the Greater Bay Area, Macao has not remained in a single coupling mode but has undergone a shift from manufacturing-based to gaming-based strategic couling. Strategic coupling has facilitated comprehensive economic and social development and prosperity in Macao, enabling the region to gradually reduce its reliance on trade. However, this process has also created a certain level of stickiness, with long-term accumulation leading to regional assets, institutional arrangements, and other factors that are not matched with the current demand for high-quality global production networks such as advanced manufacturing, technology, and finance. Consequently, this study offers pertinent policy recommendations to address these challenges and guide Macao's future development.

    Analysis on accessibility of medical emergency in urban waterlogging scenarios: A case study of the "7·20" heavy rainstorm and waterlogging disaster in Zhengzhou

    To explore the changes in medical emergency accessibility during urban waterlogging events, this paper improves the Three-Step Floating Catchment Area (3SFCA) method by coupling medical emergency demand with urban road network nodes. This approach comprehensively considers the shortest travel time and the emergency demand in inaccessible areas, providing a more holistic analysis of medical emergency accessibility. Using the "7·20" heavy rainstorm and waterlogging disaster in Zhengzhou as a case study, the results reveal the following: ① Medical emergency accessibility within Zhengzhou's Fourth Ring Road shows significant spatial disparities, with high-accessibility points clustering around more remote healthcare facilities. The overall accessibility has decreased due to urban flooding, leading to a decline in spatial equity; ② There is a negative correlation between medical emergency accessibility and population distribution, with urban flooding exacerbating this mismatch. The central urban areas experience intense competition for medical resources, while the northeastern region shows a surplus of supply; ③ The number of accessible medical institutions in key commercial centers has decreased, and response times have lengthened. Specifically, the number of accessible medical institutions within a 6-minute threshold decreased by an average of 2.8 institutions, and response times increased by an average of 23 seconds. This research provides evidence for government and relevant departments in the construction of urban medical infrastructure and emergency medical services, supporting decision-making in response to flood disasters.

    Cutting-edge methods in quantitative geography and reform of the undergraduate "quantitative geography" textbooks

    Quantitative geography is a methodological discipline that plays a crucial role in developing students' abilities to quantitatively analyze and solve practical geographical problems. This paper systematically evaluates and compares commonly used cutting-edge methods in current geographical journals with the content of quantitative geography textbooks, revealing differences between the two and analyzing the reasons for the disconnection. The comparative study finds that outdated textbooks and the disconnection between teaching and research are the main reasons. The paper also compares differences in regression analysis methods between quantitative geography and econometrics textbooks, notably emphasizing the importance of the Gauss-Markov theorem and associated econometric tests. The omission of the concept in the quantitative geography textbooks leads to the incorrect application of these econometric tests in empirical studies. Finally, the paper offers suggestions for textbook and teaching reforms. These suggestions include introducing cutting-edge econometric models, and spatial analysis methods, collaboratively developing interdisciplinary quantitative geography textbooks, increasing class hours, implementing case-based teaching strategies, integrating various teaching software, and adopting diverse assessment methods. Through textbook and teaching reforms, the gap between quantitative geography textbooks and research can be bridged, which helps cultivate high-quality talents adapted to new trends in geographical research, and promote the overall development of the geography discipline.
