A review of the belt and road initiative studies from the perspective of geopolitics
    2018, 27(03): 1-10.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (381KB) ( )
In autumn 2013, President of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), Xi Jinping, announced the Belt and One Road initiative(BRI), comprising of the land-based “Silk Road Economic Belt” and the “Maritime Silk Road of the 21st Century”. The essence of BRI is to promote regional and cross-continental connectivity between China. BRI has already hugely boosted trade and investment. To a certain extent, BRI have the inherent geopolitics characteristics. As an important strategy pursued by China in the new era, BRI will surely have significant geopolitical and strategic impacts, especially will play a role in reshaping the peripheral and global geopolitics. In a widely accepted form, geopolitics give us indicators and analytical methods about the reality of international relations, and provide ideas and theoretical support for strategic decision-making. Many researchers have been made much research in geopolitics and political geography about the BRI, with useful results being obtained. This review tries to objectively discusses the views and opinions of scholars about BRI from the perspective of geopolitics, including theory, motivation, environment, impact, risk and strategic approaches. We propose some future research directions on the basis of the analysis, which might address these shortcomings, including constructing some geopolitical theories to explain new phenomena and problems caused by BRI; improving evaluation study of geostrategic effect and risk caused by BRI; promote in-depth studies in the analysis of the geopolitical environment.

    Abstract ( )   PDF (1340KB) ( )
Along with the increasing competition on the Arctic related interests among world powers, Arctic social science research emerges as a critical research field. Analyzing the collaboration network and citation network of this field helps to understand the relation pattern and the characteristics of the knowledge flow among researchers, and thus can deeply look into the development of the domestic Arctic social science research. The objective of this paper is to analyze the co-author relationship and citation relationship of the Arctic social science research in the Chinese journal literature from 2007 to 2015. Centrality analysis and community analysis were used to investigate the structures of the collaboration network and citation network of the Arctic social science research in China. A few large-scale research groups had formed among the Arctic social science researchers, and yet most of the researchers were scattered for lack of communication and cooperation mechanism. In addition, the knowledge flows among active authors are asymmetric and intergenerational characteristics began to emerge. It is necessary to stimulate the enthusiasm of people from different fields to participate in Arctic social science research. Furthermore, complementary research teams should build to promote the development of Arctic Social Science Research.

The Coupling and Coordinating Analysis between Aiding Tibet and Urbanization in Tibet Autonomous Region
    2018, 27(03): 42-54.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (1604KB) ( )
Aiding Tibet has a strong relationship with urbanization in Tibet Autonomous Region. This paper takes 74 counties (cities, districts) of Tibet Autonomous Region as investigated subjects. By establishing an index system for aiding Tibet in terms of three aspects and Tibetan urbanization in terms of four aspects during 2000~2015, this paper first analyzed the development trend of aiding Tibet and urbanization respectively. Then we applied the coupling coordination model to examine the coupling and coordinating level between aiding Tibet and urbanization as well as their spatial distribution. With the support of gray correlation analysis method, we further analyzed the correlation and interaction factors. The results show that: 1) Since the 21st century, the comprehensive level of aiding Tibet and urbanization keep increasing during the study period but most counties are still at a lower urbanization level. 2) The coordinating degree between aiding Tibet and urbanization has been showing a gradually upward trend; in 2015, most counties have high coupling degree but low coordinating degree, showing spatial characteristics of “higher degrees in southeast, lower in northwest”; the four coupling coordination partitions show spatial variation with the altitude and higher degree region mainly distributes in the regional center. 3) Strong positive correlation between each factor of aiding Tibet and urbanization has been found; financial transfer payment and construction investment are the main factors of urbanization. Meanwhile, aiding Tibet shows more significant effects on economy urbanization. Finally, some corresponding suggestion has been proposed on aiding Tibet and Tibetan urbanization.

Evolution of temporal-spatial pattern of Rice Production and Its Driving Mechanism in Jianghan Plain During 2000-2015
    2018, 27(03): 99-108.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (1498KB) ( )
With the increasing population in our country, food security has become the key factor for maintaining the steady development of the country. Since ancient times, Jianghan Plain is an important grain producing area in our country and plays an important role in maintaining food security in our country. It has typical and research value. Based on the grain yield data of Jianghan Plain from 2000 to 2015, this paper studies the spatial and temporal changes of grain production in Jianghan Plain over the past 16 years through regional center of gravity model and spatial autocorrelation technique, and then discusses its driving mechanism. Analysis results: (1) The total output of paddy rice in Jianghan Plain and the average value of counties continued to grow. High-yielding counties are concentrated in the eastern part of the plain, and the middle-high-yielding counties are gradually moving eastward and southward. The distribution of low-yielding counties is scattered and increasingly marginalized. (2) The center of grain yield of Jianghan Plain showed a tendency of moving eastwards and southwards, and the rate of change experienced a process of rapid and slow recovery. The spatial pattern tended to be stable. (3) The grain yield distribution of Jianghan Plain shows spatial aggregation, while the high-yielding areas are mainly concentrated in the eastern area, while the low-yielding areas are concentrated in the west and the overall scale is small. Conclusion: The spatial pattern of cultivated land resources, such as spatial pattern change, speeding up of urbanization, tilting of national policies, planting benefits and cultivation techniques, led to the spatial pattern evolution of paddy production in Jianghan Plain by dominant factors and subsidiary factors.

    2018, 27(03): 109-119.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (1096KB) ( )
Based on the models of regional gravity center, geographic concentration index and inconsistency index, from 1988 to 2012, the spatial distribution and coupling relationship between arable land and agricultural labor force in Erhai lake Area are analyzed. The results indicate that: with time going on, the evolutionary trend of the gravity center of arable land was mainly to the northwest, while southeast as a secondary; the phased change of the gravity center of agricultural labor force is obviously, overall shifted to the southwest; In 25 years, the space-overlaps and changes in consistency of arable land and agricultural labor force gravity were both significantly increased, the coupling trend of the two gravity centers are becoming more and more obvious. The degree of geography concentration of arable land and agricultural labor force in Haixi area are both far above those in Haidong, the west coast of Erhai Lake, S221 and G214 are the main and minor agglomeration axis of arable land and agricultural labor force respectively; Since 1988, the arable land gathered to the central and northern regions of Haixi, while the agricultural labor force showing a change from decentralized to centralized layout, as a whole, there was a highly positive correlation between them; With time going on, the coordination degree of spatial distribution of arable land and agricultural labor force in the village area decreased obviously, according to the inconsistency index, the Erhai lake Area can be divided into five types of villages which are arable land advantage agglomeration type, agricultural labor force lag distribution type, arable land-agricultural labor force spatial coordination type, arable land lag distribution type and agricultural labor force advantage agglomeration type.

Students’ daily activity spaces between different campuses in the context of college suburbanization ——A case study of East China Normal University in Shanghai
    2018, 27(03): 131-142.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (1216KB) ( )
With higher education stepping into the popularity development stage, the process of college suburbanization speeds up. It shapes special daily activities space of suburban students. Students in suburban areas relatively lack of internship, leisure and shopping opportunities, which has lead to the inconvenience of students' daily life and unfairness of urban space utilization. Based on this phenomenon, the study gets first-hand data from students’ activity and travel survey in Minhang Campus and Zhongbei Campus, East China Normal University, which was conducted in April, 2016. Methods of case studies, spatial analysis based on GIS and binomial logistic regression model, are used. The study uses standard confidence ellipse to measure students’ activity space in weekdays and weekends. Spatial overlay analysis is used to compare students' activity space and their use of urban space between urban and suburban campuses. The study also analyzes influencing factors of suburban students’ use of urban space to examine their inter-individual differences. The study finds that suburban students travel farther and experience larger activity space than urban students in terms of commuting, leisure and shopping activity. Besides, most students carry out the daily activity, especially commuting activity, within urban areas, no matter which campus they live on. Suburban students’ activities depend on urban areas more at weekends than weekdays due to loose time constraints. Moreover, there are obvious differences in the utilization of urban space by suburban students with different social and economic attributes. The study of students’ activity space will provide empirical basis for planning department about the site of new suburban campuses.

STUDY ON THE IMPACT AND DRIVING MECHANISM OF RURAL TOURISM DEVELOPMENT ON PLACE: TAKE HONGKENG VILLAGE AS A CASE
    2018, 27(03): 143-155.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (1051KB) ( )
With the deep development of tourism, the concepts and theories of place are more and more concerned by scholars, and the problems arising from local participation in tourism activities and the distribution of benefits has also been paid more attention by public. The rural area as a form of place has great significance in China, rural area’s placeness is the most important attraction for development of tourism. However, in the context of globalization, the placeness of rural area is gradually fading, and even been commercialized as products are being sold. Therefore, calling attention to the placeness of rural tourism is very necessary, especially in today's China. In order to interpret the placeness of rural tourism development process and analyze its evolution mechanism, this paper based on humanistic geography theory, stakeholders’ theory, community participation theory, selects Hongkeng Village as a case to conduct an empirical study from the local residents’ perspective. This paper also makes up for deficiencies in domestic researches which most of them only from tourist perspective. In this study, the results can be concluded as follows: ①The placeness of Hongkeng Village is reflected in three aspects: physical form-Tulou, internal culture-Hakkas’ folk culture, living environment-original ecological rural human settlements, its formation and change accord with “inheritance- accumulation-interference” mechanism; ②Tourism development brings positive and negative effects to the local area, which negative effects include two aspects: the plight of living and protection and the villagers’ irregular ways to make a profit. Economy, institution and culture are the three main influencing factors, each of them affect local residents through interest, game and inner motivation driven, thus bring significant influence to placeness; ③Local residents have the dual identities: they are both subjects and objects of placeness. On one hand, as a part of placeness, residents are the inheritors and participants of local tourism development; on the other hand, the economic, institutional and cultural factors have impacts on placeness all through the residents. Thus, the local residents play a key role in the development of rural tourism, and it also gives a good research perspective to study on the intersection of placeness and tourism issues. At last, based on the above analysis, this paper put forward some countermeasures on strengthening community participation, reforming government management and the suggestions of tourism planning for the tourism development of Hongkeng village.
