    Governance of cross-border regions: Comparative study of Chinese and Western theories and practices

    As cross-border regions function as hubs for factor flows and hotspots of regional conflicts, the significance of collaborative cross-border governance has grown increasingly prominent. To clarify the governance connotation of cross-border regions, this paper has systematically reviewed relevant theories and practices in China and the West. Western cross-border governance theories have evolved from regionalism to new regionalism, focusing on the adaptability of governance actors and systems. Key actors include national and local authorities, enterprises and residents, who collectively form the alliance of 'authority-capital-social actors' and establish collaborative networks via multi-level, multi-center and holistic governance approaches. By contrast, China's cross-border governance emphasizes power and responsibility coordination among multi-level governments of adjacent administrative regions. Its governance mode has transitioned from rigid governance driven by administrative division adjustments to flexible governance guided by strategic planning and collaboration among regional organizational collaboration. In flexible governance, cross-border governance has shifted beyond traditional administrative-based governance toward multi-level networked cooperative governance, which aims to pursue the overall interests of the region.

    The impact of tourism industry agglomeration on economic resilience: A comparative study between inbound and domestic markets

    Based on China's provincial panel data from 2007 to 2019, this study employs GIS methods, spatial Markov chains, and panel econometric models to depict the spatial-temporal evolution patterns of tourism agglomeration, inbound tourism economic resilience, and domestic tourism economic resilience under the impact of the 2008 global financial crisis, as well as a comparative study on the differential effects of tourism industrial agglomeration on inbound and domestic tourism economic resilience across different periods. The results indicate that: ①From 2007 to 2019, there was significant heterogeneity in the changes in specialization agglomeration of the tourism industry, with a spatial distribution that was misaligned with China's economic growth map. In contrast, diversification agglomeration levels steadily increased, evolving toward a spatial pattern of high in the inland and low in the southeast. ②During the shock-resistance period, inbound and domestic tourism economic resilience exhibited a spatial pattern of high in the central and eastern regions and low in the western regions, while in the recovery and adjustment period, it showed a stepped characteristic of high in the western regions and low in the eastern regions. Moreover, the volatility, spatial disparity, and non-spatial dependence of inbound tourism economic resilience were more pronounced than those of domestic tourism in both periods. ③The scale effect and brand effect of specialization agglomeration in the tourism industry were more conducive to local inbound and domestic tourism economies resisting shocks compared to the risk-diversifying effect and automatic stabilizer role of diversification agglomeration. Specialization agglomeration could even radiate to neighboring domestic tourism, while the effect of diversification agglomeration was limited to within provinces and cities. ④The role of diversification agglomeration in the tourism industry in promoting the recovery and adjustment capabilities of local inbound, local, and neighboring domestic tourism industries was more pronounced than that of specialization agglomeration, and over-competition in the tourism industry affected the realization of specialization agglomeration effects.

    The impact of port landscape on national image under popular geopolitical perspective:Case of the new joint inspection building at Nanxi River, Hekou Highway Border Crossing

    This study tried to use popular geopolitical methods to study the impact of the port landscape on the national image, taking the new joint inspection building of the Nanxi River at the Hekou Highway Port in Yunnan on the Sino-Vietnamese border as an example for in-depth analysis. As the outpost of China's homeland security and the frontier of opening up to the outside world, the construction of border crossings is of great significance to the construction of the national image and the high-quality development of the border areas. This study analyzed the impact of the construction of the new Joint Inspection Building in Hekou Nanxi River on China's national image among domestic and foreign audiences from the perspective of popular geopolitics. It summarized the mechanism of the impact of the port landscape on the national image, adopting the methods of discourse analysis and cyber ethnography to collect relevant data from government media websites at all levels, Wechat offical accounts, and domestic and foreign social media for systematic analysis. The construction of the new JIB building mainly builds a strong national image among domestic audiences, while it generates a more complex emotional response among foreign audiences, with both positive evaluations and negative emotions due to political and cultural differences. Various factors jointly play a role in the audience's emotional perception of the building, which in turn affects the construction of the national image. As an important part of national image construction, the construction of the port landscape should not only pay attention to the improvement of the material level but also pay attention to the emotional experience of the audience and the influence of media communication. At the same time, the study also reveals the complexity and challenge in the process of China's national image construction, which provides theoretical support and inspiration for China's port construction and national image construction in the future.This paper enriches the combination of popular geopolitics with landscape research and national image research,which has certain academic value and practical significance.

    The evolution of global production networks and the difference in contributions between China and the United States

    Based on the inter-country input-output tables of OECD, this paper constructs a global production network, and an economic pull effect model to explore the evolution of the global production network and the contribution differences between China and the United States. The study finds that from 1995 to 2020, the total global output has increased significantly, especially in the years following China's accession to the WTO. By calculating and comparing the coefficients of major countries in terms of input-output scale, value-added rate, production capacity level, and self-sufficiency, the research reveals the disparities among countries in the global production network. Overall, the United States maintains a leading position in high value-added and production capacity, while China gradually narrows the gap with rapid growth. Other countries show varying performances, with some developed economies slowing down and emerging economies growing significantly. Regarding the contribution of China and the United States to the global economy, China's pull on the total economic volume of other countries has exceeded that of the United States. There are significant differences in the pull patterns between China and the United States: China mainly pulls Asia and emerging economies, with a particularly significant impact on developing countries, and the pull growth rate is fast; in contrast, the United States has a more prominent pull on traditional allies and emerging markets, but the growth rate is relatively slow.

    Progress and prospect of area studies in geography: An analysis based on articles published in World Regional Studies

    On the basis of interpreting the conceptual connotation of area studies and the evolutionary process of geographical participation in this field, this paper takes 377 area studies articles published in World Regional Studies from 1992 to 2025 as research samples, and systematically sorts out the current research status via bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review. The findings are as follows: ①Geography has long served as a key participant in China's area studies, evolving through four stages: knowledge translation and preliminary description, establishment of the comprehensive regional analysis paradigm, marginalization amid the quantitative revolution, and disciplinary revival and self-awareness. ②The annual publication volume has undergone a three-phase evolution of "low-level fluctuation – steady growth – explosive surge". Research objects have expanded from China's neighboring regions and major countries including the United States, Russia and Japan to peripheral regions. Qualitative methods dominate existing research with quantitative methods as a supplement. Publishing institutions are predominantly normal universities, forming a spatial pattern of "three-pole agglomeration with multi-point support", and research purposes are increasingly academic-oriented. ③The research topics cover eight major fields: geopolitics and conflict evolution, resources, energy and geo-economics, population migration and aging, urbanization and spatial expansion, land use and sustainable development, tourism industry and tourist source markets, industrial trade and foreign investment, as well as transportation infrastructure and spatial planning. ④There are prominent disparities in regional research focuses: studies on the Global South concentrate on existential issues such as conflicts, resources and population migration, while research on the Global North (Europe, America and Japan) focuses on regulative issues including institutional innovation, governance transformation and climate resilience. Finally, this paper presents discussions and prospects from the following aspects: expanding research methodologies and approaches, advancing studies on the Global South, the geographical restructuring of "efficiency-security", and the identity tension between interdisciplinarity and disciplinary autonomy.

    Embeddedness and enclave: Small business practices of Chinese migrants in Addis Ababa

    Under the impetus of China's "Belt and Road" initiative and "Going Out" strategy, a large number of Chinese migrants have relocated to Africa to engage in small-scale commercial activities, sparking scholarly debates on how migrants integrate into the host country's economy and society. Taking the case of Chinese small business activities in Addis Ababa as a representative example, this study employs qualitative research methods—participant observation and in-depth interviews—to trace the development of Chinese migrant business networks and spatial distribution over the past two decades. The findings reveal that Chinese migrants pursue a strategy of "dual embeddedness", constructing economic and social networks across both the home and host countries in order to sustain their livelihoods and pursue development. In response to exclusion from host societies and their own sense of insecurity, Chinese migrants have established "enclaves" as self-segregated economic and social spaces. The formation of such enclaves is not merely a passive reaction to marginalization, but also an active strategy undertaken by Chinese migrants to safeguard their interests and maintain their social networks. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the characteristics of migrant small-scale business activities and offers insights into facilitating the overseas operations and everyday lives of Chinese migrants.

    Research on the coordinated pathways of carbon peaking and steady industrial growth in the Yangtze River Economic Belt

    The coordination between steady industrial growth and the carbon peaking target constitutes a critical pathway to optimize economic structure and advance green and low-carbon transition. Using a system dynamics model, this paper designs alternative policy scenario combinations to simulate the impacts of economic development, energy mix, and industrial proportion on carbon peaking, and identifies the optimal pathway for reconciling steady industrial growth with carbon peaking in the YREB. Three findings emerge. First, both an overly rapid and an overly slow decline in the industrial share hinder the joint objective. Second, under the baseline and high-growth scenarios, the YREB is unlikely to peak emissions by 2030, whereas an energy-optimization scenario delivers a peak by 2025. Third, conditional on the energy-optimization path, an industrial share in the range of 26.6~29.1 percent serves as an effective fulcrum for reconciling carbon peaking with stable industrial expansion. Finally, based on their own resource endowments, provinces and municipalities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt can pursue differentiated carbon peaking targets, further boost the development of high-tech and high-value-added industries, effectively raise industrial production efficiency, lower carbon emissions, and achieve coordination between industrial development and carbon peaking.

    Evolutionary characteristics and multidimensional proximity mechanism of resilience in Chinese urban innovation networks: A dual perspective of structure and function

    Enhancing the resilience of urban innovation networks helps to build a secure national innovation system and safeguard urban innovation functions. Based on data on cooperative invention patent applications among 346 Chinese cities from 2011 to 2020, this paper constructs China's urban innovation network. From the dual perspective of "structure and function" and the three-dimension framework of "node-edge-overall resilience," it builds a network resilience system. In addition, this study adopts disruption simulation and GIS spatial analysis to characterize the temporal dynamics and spatial patterns of network structural resilience, and utilizes a negative binomial regression model to test the multidimensional proximity mechanisms. The results show that: ① From 2011 to 2020, China's urban innovation network formed a diamond?shaped network architecture with Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Chengdu as its vertices, and developed a pattern of "one core leading, multiple poles interacting, and multiple regions coordinating". ② The network exhibited a trend of structural stability, functional robustness, and enhanced resilience. Key nodes and key edges exerted a decisive influence on structural stability and functional robustness. It was found that advantaged nodes and their network linkages are mostly located within the diamond framework, whereas vulnerable nodes are mostly found in small and medium?sized cities in the northwest and northeast, or in areas with concentrated ethnic minority populations. ③ Multidimensional proximity is a key mechanism driving network resilience. Geographic proximity, cognitive proximity, social proximity, and cultural proximity all contribute to enhancing both structural resilience and functional resilience among cities.

    Spatiotemporal variation and spatial convergence of marine fisheries industrial agglomeration development: Empirical evidence from national-level sea ranch demonstration areas

    Sea ranches are an emerging development mode of marine fisheries industry, an important means of conserving marine living resources, and an effective measure for optimizing the industrial layout of marine fisheries industry. Based on the big data of enterprises' location related to the marine fisheries industry, this paper applies the kernel density estimation method to measure the development level of marine fisheries industry in 67 districts/counties participating in the construction of the national-level sea ranch demonstration areas from 2008 to 2023, analyzes the spatiotemporal differentiation pattern and evolution characteristics of marine fisheries industry and its subsectors, and examines its spatial convergence using the β convergence model. The results show that: ① The marine fisheries industry presents the spatial pattern of multi-core agglomeration, and the aggregation hotspots of marine fisheries subsectors gradually increase over time. ② There are absolute and conditional β convergence characteristics in the three major ocean economic zones, among which the eastern ocean economic zone has the fastest convergence speed. ③ All the marine fisheries subsectors have absolute and conditional β convergence characteristics. The convergence speed of seafood processing subsector is much faster than those of mariculture and seafood wholesale & retail subsectors. ④ The establishment of national-level sea ranch demonstration areas has a significant positive effect on the agglomeration of marine fisheries industry. Accordingly, this paper will provide theoretical basis and practical reference for the development of marine fishery industry and the construction of "blue granary".

    The impact mechanism and income-increasing effect of farmers' concurrent employment in mountainous areas from the perspective of rural revitalization: Based on survey data from 6 496 households in Chongqing city

    Concurrent employment plays a crucial role in optimizing the allocation of allocation of agriculrural resources, improving agricultural production efficiency, and enhancing farmers' income, thereby contributing to the consolidation of poverty alleviation achievements and the advancement of rural revitalization. Drawing on survey data from 6 496 households in 391 administrative villages (or communities) across Chongqing Municipality, this study investigates the impact mechanisms and income effects of different types of concurrently employed farm households using an unordered multinomial logistic regression model and the propensity score matching (PSM). The results show that: ① Concurrent employment among farm households in mountainous areas is shaped by a combination of factors, including human capital, physical capital, policy support, social capital, and geographic location. It represents an adaptive livelihood strategy in response to socio-economic transformations in the post-poverty alleviation era. ② Various levels of concurrent employment significantly enhance total per capita income and non-farm income, with a stronger income-boosting effect observed at higher levels of concurrent employment. Type-I concurrent employment households show a significant positive impact on agricultural income, while Type-II and non-farm households exhibit a significant negative correlation. ③The income-enhancing effects of concurrent employment vary across employment regions and terrain types: Type-II and non-farm households engaged in out-of-province employment exhibit a significantly greater increase in non-farm income compared to those working within the county or province. Additionally, households in hilly areas experience overall stronger income growth than those in mountainous regions.

    Evolutionary characteristics and influencing factors of high-level opening-up in China's land border areas

    As the forefront of opening up to the outside world, the land border areas are a significant space for coordinating both domestic and international aspects of the "Belt and Road" initiative. Therefore, revealing the evolution of the high-level opening up pattern and its influencing factors in land border areas is of great importance for China to advance high-level opening up and high-level development. Based on this, the article uses the entropy method to measure the level of high-level opening up in China's border regions, and uses GIS spatial analysis and spatial econometric methods to explore its spatiotemporal evolution patterns and influencing factors. The results indicate that: ① In terms of temporal evolution, the overall high-level opening-up of land border areas shows a fluctuating upward trend, with the southwestern region demonstrating a more significant improvement, while the northeastern region shows a fluctuating downward trend; ② In terms of spatial evolution, the distribution of opening-up in land border areas is generally spreading from the northeastern region to the southwestern region; ③ As for influencing factors, the level of economic development, cross-border transportation accessibility, the establishment of free trade pilot zones, intellectual property trade, and the digital economy all have a significant positive impact on high-level opening-up, whereas geopolitical risks from neighboring countries have a negative impact. This paper reveals the influencing factors of high-level opening-up in land border areas, aiming to provide scientific reference for promoting China's high-level opening-up.

    The translation publication of academic human geography books in Chinese mainland since 2000: Retrospect and prospect

    Based on the lasting accumulation and the recent search for the published information,this paper analyzes the publication status of human geography translation in China in the past 20 years. The translation publication of academic human geography books shows some new characteristics, such as the diversity of publishing subjects, the expanded coverage of sub-disciplines, and the prominence of translations by renowned foreign geographers. At the same time, there are also some problems worth paying attention to in the translation of human geography books, including the seriously unbalanced distribution of translated works across sub-disciplines, the need to improve the quality of translations, and the lack of Chinese translations of some important disciplinary works. To solve these problems, we need to take measures to appropriately enhance the status of translation works in academic performance evaluation. The high-quality geography academic translation will lay the literature foundation for the independent knowledge production of human geography in China.

    Research on spatial allocation and its configuration of elderly care facilities in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region

    The increasingly severe population aging poses a major challenge to China's modernization drive, while the equitable spatial distribution of elderly care service facilities is vital to the well-being of older adults. Based on the POI data of elderly care facilities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in 2020 and the aging population data of the seventh national census, the spatial agglomeration characteristics of aging population and elderly care facilities in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region were analyzed at county scale, and the supply-demand ratio model of elderly care facilities was constructed to study the spatial allocation of elderly care resources in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.The research results show that: ① The population aging type of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region is mainly type Ⅱ (the population aging rate is 10%-14%) and type Ⅲ (the population aging rate is 14%-20%). The high-value areas of population aging are mainly distributed in Tangshan, Qinhuangdao, Zhangjiakou and Hengshui in Hebei Province, and the low-value areas are mainly concentrated in the urban area and the southeast area of Beijing, suburban areas of Xiongan, as well as Shijiazhuang, Xingtai and Handan. ② The center of the elderly care facilities is located at the junction of Beijing and Langfang, showing a distribution pattern of "Beijing and Tianjin as the core and Shijiazhuang as the secondary core". ③ In the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, supply of elderly care facilities is less than demand on the whole, and the spatial allocation of elderly care resources is unbalanced. The counties with relatively high supply and demand of elderly care facilities are mainly concentrated in the north of Beijing, Shijiazhuang and Qinhuangdao, while districts and counties with low supply?demand ratios are mainly located in the areas surrounding Beijing and Tianjin in Hebei province, as well as in Hengshui City. According to the study, we suggest that under the background of coordinated development, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region should scientifically formulate special plans for elderly care services, strengthen the monitoring of elderly care service demands and the prediction of future trends in population aging, and achieve the optimal allocation of elderly care resources.

    Endogenous development pathways in the peripheral region: A case study of Longyan City, Fujiang Province, an old revolutionary base area

    Centered on the theoretical debate between "endogenous drive" and "external dependence", there remains a significant divergence in academia regarding the selection of development paths for peripheral regions. Taking Longyan City in Fujian Province, an old revolutionary base area, as a case study, this paper explores the endogenous development path of peripheral regions. Based on first-hand data collected via field surveys, in-depth interviews, and questionnaires, this study identifies the driving factors and mechanisms of endogenous development that facilitate Longyan's transition from "external empowerment" to "internal activation". The research finds that central policy support, transport interconnectivity, and green consumption upgrading constitute three favorable external conditions for Longyan's new round of development, providing the prerequisites for stimulating endogenous dynamics. Against this backdrop, Longyan has explored a multi-dimensional, collaborative endogenous development path: in terms of factor agglomeration, by tapping into the profound clan concepts and rural attachments of the local Hakka people, it has innovated a talent attraction model featuring "hometown sentiment plus institutional incentives", thereby realizing the endogenous return of human capital; in terms of institutional environment, it has constructed a policy system of "government service innovation plus factor guarantees" to stimulate the endogenous vitality of market entities; in terms of industrial transformation, it has formed an enclave economy model of "R&D in central cities, production in Longyan" and established jointly-built industrial research institutes by the government, universities, and enterprises, achieving the endogenous cultivation of industrial innovation capabilities. Moving forward, it is necessary to further deepen institutional innovation, build high-level R&D platforms, and establish special industrial funds to continuously strengthen the endogenous development momentum of old revolutionary base areas. This study reveals the synergistic mechanism between external condition empowerment and endogenous motivation activation, providing new empirical evidence for the theoretical debate on the endogenous development models of peripheral regions.
